If you're an avid reader like me, there'll have been so many books that they begin to merge and mesh. It's a magical thing when you read a book, and it not only stands out and sticks with you, but it changes your entire trajectory. That's what these four books did for me - they shaped my professional life in ways I couldn't have imagined.

Dear You, They say "It takes a village" and you hate that saying because it's a stark and painful reminder that you don't have one. It hurts, it rankles and it smarts doesn't it?! I know that you often feel alone, depleted, invisible and torn. As though there's nowhere or no one in which to turn for help. You might at times feel jealous of those who do have support. Anger, too, at your circumstances. Regret for the choices you may have made. Despair at the choices which felt as though they were taken from you. Exhaustion at the monotony of it all, wishing and wanting and needing a break.

When it comes to adopting social media, I was one of the relatively late ones to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I'd seen the rise of MySpace and it just hadn't interested me. It was a friend I'd not seen for a while who encouraged me to get going with Facebook. He thought I'd love catching up with people there. And, I did enjoy it. Oftentimes, a bit too much. When I go in, I tend to go all in. Before I knew it, I had hundreds of friends, thousands on Twitter and Instagram.

Readwise: A Really Nifty Tool For Your Kindle Highlights

As I read books on my Kindle, I tend to highlight the bits that resonate with me or the bits in non-fiction books which I'd like to action. All of these highlights are accessible on Amazon but I'm never sure what to do with them there. In the past, I've printed some and filed them but I prefer a paper-free digital office space. It felt as though I was highlighting and that those highlights would then just lurk around somewhere in the background, never to be acknowledged by me again.
