Our daughter is in her minimalistic preppy era and wanted a blanket for her bed which fit the brief.

Materials used

Lionbrand Go For Fleece Sherpa Yarn in Blush – 7 balls (get $5 off, using my link)
15mm Crochet Hook
Pattern: The Forever Winter Throw

The Make

After a quick look on Etsy, I stumbled across this pattern and knew it was ‘the one’ – it didn’t ‘look’ like a crochet patterned blanket (the request was for a blanket with no holes). The selling point for me was that the yarn used looked ultra soft and comforting.

We chose the colour ‘blush’ because it’s neutral with tones of pinky peach. It worked out far cheaper to get the yarn imported than to buy from anywhere I could find in the UK. Surprisingly, it only took 7 days to arrive and while I was waiting, I bought the 15mm crochet hook the pattern said I needed.

The pattern is simple and I’d say it was perfect for beginners if it wasn’t for how thick the yarn is. As you’re working the rows, you can’t see the crochet holes and that takes a little getting used to. You have to feel your way and that made me a little nervous that I might have been missing stitches. Turns out, I was missing stitches. As I worked the blanket, the edges started creeping in. I ended up undoing it all and starting again.

In fact, it’ll be third time lucky with this blanket as despite it being terrifically soft and beautiful, it’s oddly long and thin. We’d prefer it to be a bit squarer so I’m going to end up undoing the lot and re-crocheting it. I’ll expand the width by another 15 or so stitches, losing some of the length but ending up with a blanket that better suits.

I don’t mind at all because it works up so quickly and I’d rather it was how we want it to be so it can be loved harder. All in all, the blanket took less than 9 hours to work up, including my re-working of it the second time. By the time I’ve properly finished-finished-finished it, I’ll have spent about 18-19 hours in total which isn’t much at all for a luxurious-looking-and-feeling blanket that’ll last and be cherished for years to come.

My mum loves it so much that she’s ordered the yarn in ‘seafoam’ so I can make her one too! Will pop a photo of that in here as soon as that’s finished.

How To Choose Your ‘Word Of The Year’

Last week I shared what my word of 2023 was and how staying committed to it changed a great deal in my life. It was the first time I'd ever made a beginning-of-the-year intention and stuck with it. I could fill reams of paper with the New Year's Resolutions I wrote over the years (since I was a teeneager!) and promptly forgot or put down.

Readwise: A Really Nifty Tool For Your Kindle Highlights

As I read books on my Kindle, I tend to highlight the bits that resonate with me or the bits in non-fiction books which I'd like to action. All of these highlights are accessible on Amazon but I'm never sure what to do with them there. In the past, I've printed some and filed them but I prefer a paper-free digital office space. It felt as though I was highlighting and that those highlights would then just lurk around somewhere in the background, never to be acknowledged by me again.

How We Handle Eczema Flare-Ups In Our House

Writing about Eczema might seem like a complete u-turn in the content I ordinarily write but my blogging roots are in a) health and beauty (hello, Beach Bum Beauty Blog circa 2009), and, b) writing about what I've gone through (hello, The Blurt Foundation 2011 - 2022) first-hand or through parenting. So, Eczema, then. Eczema is a skin condition which can cause inflammation in the skin, making it sore, itchy, and dry.

Body-Doubling For When You’re Struggling to Focus OR Get Started On Tasks

You know how you hear about something new and then you hear about the same thing a few more times before you really take note?
